They were photographed in the early morning 'Golden hour' where the light is a warm yellow. Great Blues do have a lot of brown on their necks and belly feathers and are more blue-grey above. A blue sky will also contribute to the blue color on back and wings in flight.

The Great Blue Herons I saw flying over my creek were blue. The ones in the photos look brown. Is it an accident of the light?

I thought it must be something like that. When they flew down the creek they kept about five feet above the water. It was thrilling. Such big birds!
