Absolutely adore Egrets! Thank you for breaking down the difference between both species. The photo of the egret with its wings up during feeding is such a remarkable capture!
Amazing photos. I've never seen a Reddish Egret. The thing that's really blowing my mind here is the blue legs. I can't think of another bird that has them.
Thanks Nathaniel. They are really spectacular birds and so much fun to watch. I don’t know of any other bird with blue legs either, except the Blue-footed Booby.
Such great work, Sandra! 👏 I just recommended your Substack to a friend who is a committed birder and a fine nature photographer. Told him he should be inspired by you to start his own publication!
I don't believe I saw any of these when I was in Florida. If I did, it was white, and I might not have noticed the bill difference. If I ever get back there I will look for them!
I’ve only seen the dark morph at Merritt Island NWR and at Fort de Soto park in Florida and have only seen the white morphs in Texas, as they are pretty rare. Good luck!

Wow! Thanks so much Baird. Hopefully he’ll take your advice.
Great photos! I love that grumpy poise, too.
Thanks so much Lola
