The beautiful colors of water lilies remind me of gemstones: Ruby, Garnet, Coral, Amber, Citrine, Sapphire, Amethyst, Opal, Pearl. The glowing, floating magic of these flowers never ceases to excite me. Flowers, color, water, reflections…what more perfect combination could one ask for? For me, contemplating the angles of light and shadow throughout the day is a totally immersive experience. I visit botanical gardens, grower/suppliers, or private water gardens to get these photos. A lot of photographers don’t like to shoot flowers on bright sunny days, but sunny morning or late afternoon light is my favorite. I spot meter on the brighter parts of my subject to get those deep, mysterious shadows that I’m particularly fond of. There are so many photographs I want to share that this will be an ongoing project in several parts. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoyed photographing them.
