After some research, I decided to rent the Canon EOS R7 Mirrorless Camera and the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens. Reviews boasted this combo was great for shooting wildlife, especially birds. On the APS-C camera, the 1.6x format gives the 100-400mm lens a focal length comparable to 160-640mm. My 300mm L with the 1.4x extender gives me a focal length comparable to 672mm, so it is a very similar focal length without the need for an extender. I also rented the Canon RF 1.4 extender but wasn’t thrilled with it. Auto focus was slow and it wouldn’t always hold focus on Servo eye tracking. I don’t know if it was due to that particular extender or an overall issue. I’ve read mixed reviews about the extenders on the RF 100-400mm lens.

Even though the Canon RF 100-400mm lens is an entry level lens, I was truly impressed with the performance of the camera and lens. Autofocus was fast and the animal/eye tracking was excellent, especially for birds in flight. The R7 has an impressive 32.5 megapixel sensor which creates a 23.2” 300dpi image and allows for major cropping without loss of quality. The lens is not the best in low light without upping the ISO considerably, so that can be a factor. I normally tend to shoot on bright sunny days so it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker for me.

While the camera weighs just a little over 5 ounces more than my T7i, the lens only weighs 1.4 pounds, which is 14.6 ounces less than my 70-300mm, and 19.2 ounces less than my 300mm. The 1.4x extender on my 300mm f4 lens adds an additional 7.9 ounces. My arthritic hands thanked me for giving them less weight to handle!

With only two days to test the camera, I could have fine-tuned the settings more than I had time for, but overall, I’m pretty happy with the results. All images were shot at ISO 400 for comparison and have had minor editing of levels, contrast, and noise. All edits were comparable to my Canon T7i shots.

I haven’t yet decided whether to purchase this camera and lens, although the reduction in weight tops the Pros list. Poor performance in low light definitely tops the Cons list. I’m not well versed in all the technical language so I recommend you do your own research on the specs for this camera and lens. If I’ve said something that doesn’t make sense, my apologies and please let me know how to correct it.

There were lots of other birds including egrets. ducks, pelicans, and herons and a surprise appearance of a very cute raccoon. These were my favorite shots of the day.

Rockport Harbor Marina was the next stop on January 2, to photograph interesting textures on the old fishing boats, then back home on January 3.

We had a cold, rainy start to 2025 here in New Jersey so my first visit to my local wetland was in April. At a nearby rookery, the egrets were in their breeding finery.

The first week in June found me at Roger Williams Botanical Gardens in Providence RI, and Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich MA. The gardens were incredible!

The next day, I visited Nobska Lighthouse and the Flying Bridge Marina in Falmouth MA for a tasty late lunch and abstract water reflection photography. I got no decent photographs of birds on this trip.,,bummer!

An incredibly hot summer kept me close to home, tending my little patches of flowers.

And of course, a hot summer means thunderstorms are a common occurrence.

In September, I was back at Edwin B. Forsythe NWR in New Jersey and the birds were very cooperative. It was my last opportunity for photography in 2025.

It was a great year for photography, even with my limited travel. And of course, I can’t forget my favorite capture of 2025! Two Snowy Egrets were vying for a rather small fishing spot and got into an intense discussion about who had first rights.

As breeding season approaches, Great Egrets develop beautiful long plumes on their back called aigrettes, the lores (skin between the eye and the beak) turn a bright green, and the iris sometimes changes from yellow to red. During breeding season they nest in colonies with other egrets, herons, and various wading and water birds, ranging across the southeastern and southcentral states.

The male chooses a nesting site and starts to build a nest. He then begins his mating displays, which consist of raising the plumes and posturing in an S form, raising and lowering the body, and stretching the head and neck toward the sky.

Once a female is attracted, both sexes finish building the nest. The female lays several greenish blue eggs, which take roughly 3.5 weeks to hatch. Great Egrets are monogamous, and both the male and female incubate the eggs and feed the young. Feeding can be a dangerous process. The chicks are verry grabby with that sharp beak as the parent regurgitates partially digested prey into the chick’s mouth. I’ve actually seen several Great Egrets with a damaged or missing eye. Hatchlings grow quickly and can fly around 6 weeks of age, and they learn by closely watching adult behavior.

By the 1900s, due to fashion demands, plume hunters had killed around 95% of the Great Egrets in North America. Snowy Egrets, Reddish Egrets, Tricolored Herons, Great Blue Herons, Night Herons, Ibises, Anhingas, Flamingos, and other water birds were also hunted to near extinction for their feathers. Outrage over the slaughter of millions of birds led to the formation of what later became the National Audubon Society (1905) and the passing of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in 1918. Appropriately, the Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society. Now, except for a major portion of the Rocky Mountains, Great Egrets can be found over most of the continual U.S. during migration and breeding, and in southern year-round locations.

There are two color morphs of the Reddish Egret, a dark morph which has a grey body and shaggy reddish-orange neck and head, and a rarer white morph with all white plumage. Both adults have a pink bill with a black tip and the white morph juveniles have a nearly all black beak. Dark morph and white morph Reddish Egrets will often interbreed.

Reddish Egrets are active feeders, running back and forth and often lifting and flapping their wings as if ready to take flight. They also do ‘canopy feeding’ where they lift their wings over their head to form an umbrella-like structure which reduces glare on the water and creates a shady environment which attracts fish.

I photographed the dark morph Reddish Egrets at Merritt Island NWR in Florida, during an overcast morning and again in the same spot that afternoon when the sun came out. It was so much fun watching the feeding frenzy! The white morph Reddish Egrets were photographed in south Texas.

The weather was perfect for most of the trip: sunny and mid-60s to low-70s, with a few days in the low 80s. My artist friend and I began our trip in Rockport TX, in a cute AirBnB for the first 9 days. We spent our days exploring coastal areas along Aransas Bay, the Rockport/Fulton/Corpus Christi marinas, Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass, wetlands and the South Jetty in Port Aransas, and driving along the beach at Padre Island National Seashore. Our evenings were spent enjoying the local restaurants along with a good cold beer. Man, I wish I could get some of that food here in New Jersey!

For the next 4 days, we stayed in Port Isabel and spent most of our time at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. We had some very foggy mornings and we lost one full day to rain, but by then we welcomed a rest day. While we really enjoyed photographing the birds at the SPI Birding and Nature Center, the rest of South Padre Island is too much of a kitschy tourist trap for my taste. The winds were brisk the entire time and we didn’t try driving on the beach due to the deep sand at the entrance points. We returned to Rockport for the final day and night to avoid an extremely long drive back to IAH in Houston for my flight home.

It was very exciting to end 2024 with a life bird, the Neotropic Cormorant, photographed at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. Its typical range is slightly inland and along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana, southward through Mexico, Central America, and South America. While nearly identical to a Double-crested Cormorant, The Neotropic Cormorant has a smaller body and longer tail, but the distinguishing feature in adults is the v-shaped white outline extending from the corners of the mouth and under the chin. They also develop white plumes on the side of their head in breeding season, similar to Double crested Cormorants. You can see in the first photo the tiniest bit of white plume developing.

My first photograph of 2025 was another lifer although not a bird. It’s a Guatemalan Cracker Butterfly. Its range is from Costa Rica north through Central America to Mexico. It is a rare stray to the lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas where I photographed it at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center as well. Major thanks to the nice young man who pointed it out to a group of us. Such amazing camouflage! My first bird of 2025 was a Tricolored Heron, always a welcome sight no matter how often I see them.

I also brought home a nasty case of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). With an early morning flight out of Newark, I rushed out of the house without an KN95 mask, and it never crossed my mind to search for one at the airport…duh! A little boy, maybe 4 or 5, was in the row in front of me. Anyone who flies knows that it’s easy to see through the gaps between seats and I had a clear view of him. He coughed, and coughed, and COUGHED for the entire flight and his father never asked him to cover his mouth. I could just feel the germs swarming all over me!

It started about 6 days into the trip with a runny nose. Oh, allergies I thought. Then after several more days, sinus pressure but I was still in denial and insisted it was allergies. Then a cough developed that my asthma inhaler and Dayquil controlled…just a cold I told myself. When I got home, it really hit me with a nasty cough, head congestion, fever, and fatigue. I tested negative for Covid, but it was too late to test for RSV, although my PCP was pretty sure that’s what I had. Get vaccinated if you haven’t already!

Current events have definitely impacted my mood, so writing interesting content for Substack is challenging right now. I know this is a very stressful time for a lot of us so I hope my photos can bring a bit of beauty and peace into your lives. I think most photographers have a ‘gut feeling’ when they press the shutter release that they’ve captured something interesting, but sometimes the final product can be very disappointing. I was photographing this preening Great Egret when the head position, curve of the neck and the ruffled feathers really caught my eye. I had only one shot before the egret changed positions, and the outcome was extremely underwhelming. Bird off center, super boring background, blah color…ugh.

I wondered if converting to black and white would make a difference. In Photoshop, I could have chosen Image:Mode:Grayscale but the photo would be flat and lacking much interest. Instead I chose Image:Adjustments:Black and White which give me a whole range of options for adjusting the colors and creating the values a good BW photo needs.

Since the background had a good amount of red in it, I pulled the Red slider as far to the left as it would go, resulting in a darker background. But the yellow beak also had a lot of red in it and it darkened too much, so I needed to push the yellow slider to the right to lighten the values. A few nudges of the Cyans slider to the left helped define some of the shadows in the feathers which added some depth of form. Hmmm, still a little flat.

I then adjusted the Values by darkening the shadows, and a slight lightening of the midtones and highlights to make the Egret pop a little more.

There was still too much boring background so I tried a vertical rather than horizontal crop and…finally…that’s it! A little tweak of the contrast and values, and it was done. This photo reminds me of the black and white glamour photos of the 1930s through the 1950s. What do you think? Id love to hear your thoughts.

Disclaimer: I’m not highly proficient in Photoshop, but I know enough to get by. There may be other programs that can achieve the same result, but this is what I know. This is most likely the only ‘technique’ post I’ll ever do, but I wanted to illustrate how a boring photo can be converted into something much better than the original with a little experimentation in photo editing. After Biden won the election. I felt like I could finally breathe again. Then in September of 2021, my husband almost died from Ventricular Tachycardia. Thank God he had a defibrillator implant that kept him alive through that attack. The implant fired 34 times before the ER doctors could get his heart rate under control. As Brent describes it, it was like being kicked in the chest by a horse 34 times. He received a new pacemaker/defibrillator which keeps his heart rate steady now without the pain of the shocks but the shock will be there if he ever needs it again.

During that time, we were living 3.5 hours away from our daughter and her family, and we decided we should be closer for both emotional and physical support. Moving entailed serious downsizing of our possessions and it took me 5 months of donating or selling stuff, packing up, and moving. Brent was in no shape to help. We finally got settled into a much smaller home. A year later, Brent started having Atrial Fibrillation. Medication was good at controlling the A-fib…until it wasn’t. A cardioversion last December, which involved shocking the heart back into a normal rhythm, lasted for 5 months. A second cardioversion in October, which was delayed for 5 more months due to a different medical problem, is keeping his rhythm normal for now.

On top of all of that, this nightmare of an election season added so much more stress. Like so many of you, I was sure this year would be the last of him. It’s not going to be easy to shift out of this panic mode I’ve been in for so long now that it’s become a way of life, but I’m going to give it my best effort. My mental health demands it. Hopefully, the medical emergencies will settle down and I can begin to transition back into that head space where external factors cease to exist when I’m painting.

I no longer have a large separate art studio. I’m now squeezed into the small sunroom off our kitchen. While the space has absolutely incredible natural light and is all set up, I haven’t spent much time in there since we moved in. I’ve not made the studio space ‘my own’ yet. It’s time to change that!

I have several paintings in progress that I have to unpack and finish, but I need to start small and get my painting skills back on track first. In the meantime, I thought you might like to see my last completed painting from 2021 which was painted from my own photographic reference. (Canvas prints will be available soon, see below.)

Don’t worry, I’ll still be making time for my photography and posting daily images. But rather than doom scrolling the rest of the time, I’m going to be painting again very soon. Wish me luck!

When I published my first post, ‘Welcome to Focusing on…’ on September 19, I wasn’t sure if Substack was the right fit for me or if I should even try posting on here. (I’ve added the link to that introduction post for those who missed seeing it.) I was looking for some connection to people since Facebook and Instagram have become basically worthless. But despite the short time I’ve been on Substack and having fewer than 100 subscribers, I’ve been overwhelmed by the support my photography has received through Likes, Comments, Restacks, and even a few sales of prints yesterday! I can’t begin to tell you all how much this means to me.

I also found something on Substack I wasn’t expecting, a whole community of people who feel the same way I do about so many things:  photography, nature, birding, self-care, and politics. The writing here is so refreshing after depending on mainstream media for my news, which seemed to lean too far to the right and didn’t properly cover the lies and atrocities of someone who is, in my opinion, one of the most disgusting human beings to ever walk this earth. I’m saddened and embarrassed that our country has allowed this man to do so much damage without being held accountable for his crimes.

I owe you all for keeping me sane through the most important election in my 71 years of life. I cried tears of sorrow and disbelief in 2016, tears of relief in 2020, and I’m looking forward to tears of joy this coming Tuesday or Wednesday.

So, I’m offering my deepest gratitude for welcoming me into your days here on Substack. I’ll continue to share my photography and thoughts and hope you will continue to enjoy the things I post. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Share Focusing on...

Not quite as large as a Great Blue Heron, Roseate Spoonbills (Platalea ajaja) measure 28-34” in length and weigh on average between 2.6-4.0 pounds with females being smaller than males. Roseate Spoonbills forage, usually in a group, by walking slowly and sweeping their partially open beaks back and forth through shallow water and mud. They feed on small fish, frogs, crustaceans, and aquatic insects.

Immature Roseate spoonbills are very pale pink and have a completely feathered head for 3 years until they attain adult breeding plumage.

Plume hunting in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries almost drove Roseate Spoonbills to extinction. However, they are currently considered not threatened.

I remember the first time I saw Roseate Spoonbills. I had been hoping to add them to my life list on a trip to Florida and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge did not disappoint! Usually, you’ll know if there’s an interesting bird from the large group of cars and people along the side of the road, but I was the only person at that location. I was so excited I was vibrating, and my entire first series of photos were out of focus. I’ve been fortunate to see and photograph Roseate Spoonbills on several occasions and I’ve never lost the excitement of the first time. Enjoy!

This battle raged for close to 10 minutes and several times, I thought the one egret was surely dead, but somehow it managed to escape. The aggressor followed, so I have no idea what occurred afterward. Has anyone else witnessed this kind of attack? In all my years of watching and photographing herons and egrets, this was a first for me.

Standing nearly 3 feet tall, Great Egrets weigh on average only 35.3 ounces. To put that in perspective, a large 1-liter bottle of soda weighs a total of 33.8 ounces! Great Egrets can be found over a large portion of the United States as well as Central and South America.

Great Egrets hunt in both fresh and salt water and if you’ve ever watched them stalk prey, you’ve witnessed a lesson in patience. Great Egrets glide through shallow water on long legs, one slow step at a time. Pausing to read the water, they stretch that long neck out and stand in one spot until an unsuspecting fish, frog, or crab wanders too close. Then they strike like lightning. If you blink, you might miss it!

In tidal wetlands, the spillways that allow water to flow in and out of the dikes are popular spots for wetland birds to congregate. When the tide is low, channels of water narrow, and small fish, amphibians, and crustaceans are confined in a smaller area. Large groups of birds gathering in these areas are not uncommon with many species of birds hunting together.

Squabbles arise often if a Great Egret feels another is too close for comfort. They will stretch up in a threatening pose, give a hoarse croak, then launch themselves toward the other forcing it to back off.

At times, gulls will surround the egrets, dive-bombing them and trying to steal the fish, often with great success.

The newly restored Barnegat Lighthouse is once again open to the public and attracts nearly half a million visitors each year. That doesn’t include the many locals who go there to fish for striped bass, bluefish, flounder, and other various species. To the right of the lighthouse, a concrete walkway on top of the south jetty provides a nice view of Barnegat Bay as well as access for people with disabilities.  I photographed a few Double-crested Cormorants and Least Sandpipers on the rocks along the jetty but those were pretty much it.

Since I’m also always looking for other interesting subjects, the rocks themselves captured my attention. Several people stopped and asked what I was taking pictures of, and when I told them ‘patterns in the rocks,’ most just shook their heads and moved along.

That got me thinking about how many millions of people have taken that same walk and never saw what I did. I find that very sad. There’s something interesting to be found almost everywhere if people only took the time to slow down and look.

I think these rocks have such beautiful colors and textures. The light was at just the right angle, and it lasted for such a short time. Had I arrived an hour earlier or later, or visited on an overcast day, these images would probably not have been created. Possibly others would have presented themselves, which makes returning to a familiar location at different times of day and under different lighting conditions so compelling. That’s what makes photography so exciting. Each day and hour can present something totally new if you’re open to really seeing what is there.

Once a female is interested, they’ll engage in bill clappering and locking and cozying up chest to chest. What sometimes looks like aggression is actually part of the mating ritual.

Once they’ve agreed upon each other, the nest building begins. The male Great Blue Heron will search for sticks and bring them to the female, presenting them for approval.

Both herons share the work of the nest building and maintenance as well as egg incubation and chick feeding duties. Once the chicks have fledged and can fend for themselves, the adults disperse and return to a solitary life until the next breeding season, and it all begins again.

I’ve created this Substack to share the things I love to photograph, mostly wetland birds and shorebirds, flowers, and abstract patterns. I’m not here to discuss photography techniques. There are plenty of people who provide that info and in reality, I know just enough to get by. I'm also a self-taught wildlife artist working at first in watercolor and eventually graduating to acrylics so some of my paintings may pop up from time to time. I hope to post an image each day (but you know…life) and once a week or so, create a longer post about the photos or paintings as well as sharing some of the things that got me to this point in my life.
